This was primary week in the city. It looks like Bill de Blasio won the Democrat mayoral primary. Last I heard he got 40.3% which is just enough to avoid a runoff. There are a couple thousand ballots to still count, and Bill Thompson is hoping that those votes will drop de Blasio to under 40% so there can be runoff and he can get another swing at the spot. We’ll see what happens on that front. In this morning’s Times, Sam Roberts wrote a short op-ed about the death of identity politics in New York City. I don’t believe identity politics is dead in the city, especially on the micro level. At the end of the day, de Blasio was the only Democrat who stood out amongst the pack.
