Broad Channel is a small neighborhood in Queens near Rockaway that is completely surrounded by Jamaica Bay. I remember as a kid when my dad would drive from the Bronx to Rockaway that we would go through Broad Channel and it reminded me a lot of those small beach towns I would see in movies. The neighborhood also floods on a regular basis. During the week, the Times published an article about how the city is going to raise streets to try and protect the neighborhood from flooding. The issue is that living in the neighborhood will not be sustainable as sea level continues to rise. Eventually a big storm will come and wash everything away. Nature always wins. The residents love their homes, but looking at the long term picture things will not last.
