A couple days ago the Times published this article about how politicians and business owners in Columbia, South Carolina want to push the homeless out of the city’s downtown. I read this and just shook my head. I am biased because I work in homeless services. What is infuriating about this plan by officials down in South Carolina is that it is not even attempting to address the issue of homelessness. All they care about is about pushing economic revitalization. Their plan is just to relocate a  shelter 15 miles away from the downtown and criminalize homelessness. They are not asking why homelessness is inching up in the area. Is it because of cuts to social services? The economy? Loss of jobs? No one wants to ask the hard questions. Instead they want to go the easy route and treat the weakest members of our society like dirt.
